DVA claims & permanent impairment

Supporting veterans through the claims process for almost 15 years

GO2 Health is first and foremost a treatment clinic. Supporting your DVA claims — including diagnostic assessments and permanent impairment paperwork — is an important part of that ongoing care journey.

The claims pathway can be challenging. To help you navigate this, we’ve made a guide to simplify the process. We are committed to updating this guide when and if the rules change, so that you feel supported in your journey.

We DO NOT charge a large upfront fee* or take a percentage of your compensation payout.

Please scroll through the information below, and contact us if you’re unsure.

Our team of experienced GPs and Psychiatrists can support you with your physical and mental health claims and PI assessments.

We assist veterans by:

  • Confirming diagnoses where clinically appropriate
  • Completing DVA diagnostic assessment requests
  • Completing DVA permanent impairment assessments
  • Providing specialist medical evidence when requested by DVA

While we’re here to support you along your journey, there are some services we are unable to provide.

We do not provide:

  • DVA advocacy services
  • Claims representation (e.g at the Veteran’s Review Board)
  • Medical records reviews for claim preparation

Our friendly staff will walk you through the process and answer any questions.

We cannot begin the claims process — and DVA will not pay for any appointments — unless you have already submitted your claim online and received a Diagnostic Assessment (DA) with a Transaction Reference Number (TRN) from DVA. This is not optional. If you don’t have these yet, see the bottom of this page for where to start.

DVA strongly recommends that medical assessments and diagnoses be completed by your regular treating GP — a doctor with an established, ongoing relationship with you. A treating GP knows your health history, the timeline of your conditions, and the context of your service. This makes their reports more credible to DVA.

You should expect to have at least two clinical appointments with your GP prior to the completion of the claims DA or permanent impairment assessment. These are generally billed to DVA under your white or gold card.

The situation is somewhat different for our psychiatrists completing your claims or PI assessments – please discuss with us.

Key terms explained

what do DA, TRN and PI mean?

If you’re new to the DVA claims process, these three terms come up constantly. Here’s plain-language explanation of each and why they matter to your pathway at GO2.

DA

Diagnostic Assessment

DVA's formal request for a GP to confirm your diagnosis.

When you submit a claim, DVA reviews it and may issue a DA — a request for a doctor to medically confirm whether you have the condition you’re claiming. The DA is not the claim itself. It’s DVA asking for clinical confirmation. Your GO2 GP completes this once we have an established treating relationship with you.

TRN

Transaction Reference Number

DVA's authorisation for your GP to be paid for the paperwork.

A TRN is a unique number DVA issues alongside a DA. Think of it as a purchase order — without it, DVA will not pay for any claims-related appointment. Each TRN is single-use and applies only to what DVA specifically requested. This is why we ask you to have your DA and TRN in hand before booking with us.

PI

Permanent Impairment

A formal assessment of how much an accepted condition affects your daily life.

A PI assessment measures the long-term functional impact of a condition DVA has already accepted. It determines your compensation level under the MRCA. PI must be completed by your usual treating GP — not a one-off examiner — and must be done in person. This is why building a treatment relationship with us first is essential.

Current ADF members are able to submit DVA claims while serving to ensure timely access to treatment in the future on discharge.
