Introduction
We currently have 15 general practitioners (GPs) providing clinical care from our purpose-built facility here at GO2 Health. Among these professionals is Dr. Paul Patane, a seasoned medical practitioner with 30 years of experience, three of which have been dedicated to serving at GO2 Health. Recently, we had the opportunity to discuss with Dr. Paul his approach and unwavering commitment to aiding veterans and their families in their transition to civilian life.
Dr. Paul’s medical practice is deeply rooted in service, especially to those who have bravely served our nation. His interactions with veteran patients have not only enriched his practice but also inspired him, a testament to the reciprocal nature of healthcare.
The Importance of Prioritising Health for Veterans
Our GPs at GO2 Health serve as the initial and vital contact for veterans seeking healthcare support and services. This positioning allows them to comprehensively assess, identify, and manage the distinctive health needs of veterans. Dr. Paul wholeheartedly advocates for a holistic approach to health care, focusing on the whole patient rather than isolated symptoms or conditions.
At GO2 Health, a team of more than 50 practitioners coexist under the same roof, fostering an environment conducive to comprehensive care while facilitating effective referral pathways. This integrative approach enhances the patient experience and ensures the seamless coordination of care, so that no patient gets “lost in the system”.
An honest and professional partnership between veterans and their GPs empowers them to navigate the complexities of the healthcare system. When physical injuries, chronic pain and mental health concerns are addressed, veterans are better placed to access the full range of services available to them (in all areas of their lives).
So, prioritising the physical and mental health of veterans is essential for several reasons:
- Enhancing Quality of Life: At GO2 Health, we believe that addressing veterans’ physical and mental health concerns may significantly improve their overall well-being and daily functioning.
- Facilitating Successful Transition: By focusing on health, we aim to better prepare veterans to navigate their transition to civilian life, including finding employment, adjusting to new social dynamics, and reintegrating into their communities.
- Preventing Further Health Issues: We believe early intervention and support can help prevent the development or worsening of chronic health conditions.
Our Approach to Supporting Veteran Care at GO2 Health
At GO2 Health, our GPs adopt a patient-centred approach that acknowledges the unique challenges faced by this population. The following framework outlines the key strategies that our GPs use to support veteran care:
- Specialised Knowledge: Our GPs have specialised knowledge about the needs of veterans and their families and regularly invest in continuous professional development pathways that focus on common health issues such as PTSD, anxiety, depression, chronic pain and other service-related conditions. This enables our GPs to provide more specialised, targeted care.
- Creating a Supportive Environment: Our clinic is friendly and welcoming, and we treat every client as an individual—not just another name in the booking system. We create a comfortable physical environment for our clients with genuine practitioners who encourage veterans to feel comfortable discussing their concerns and needs. We value sensitivity, empathy, and understanding to help build trust and rapport with every veteran we serve. These professional, therapeutic relationships provide the foundation for effective care.
- Collaborating with Other Healthcare Providers: GO2 Health is purpose-built to support a wide variety of other health practitioners in-house which enables strong working relationships with other healthcare professionals—such as physiotherapists, psychologists and occupational therapists—to ensure veterans receive a holistic, integrated care plan.
- Implementing Mental Health Screening: Given the prevalence of mental health issues among veterans, our GPs proactively screen for conditions like PTSD, anxiety, and depression, even if the veteran is seeking care for a physical concern.
- Engaging with Ex-Service Organizations: GPs play an essential role in helping veterans access resources and support networks within the community. GO2 Health is proud of the long-standing relationships they’ve built with ex-service organisations and the valuable referral pathways and connections they provide for veterans and their families.
Conclusion
At GO2 Health, we are committed to supporting the health and wellbeing of veterans during their transition to civilian life, and all of our GPs play a very important role in the care that is provided. By prioritising health and providing comprehensive, tailored care, we empower veterans to overcome the physical and mental challenges they face. This, in turn, lays a solid foundation for veterans to successfully reintegrate into their communities, access essential resources, and thrive in their new lives as civilians—ultimately benefiting both the individual and the wider community.
