Transitioning from the ADF to civilian life isn’t just a professional change—it’s a personal overhaul, especially when it comes to your social life. In the military, mateship is a given but on the outside, social interaction can be a mission.
Military vs. civilian mateship
In the ADF, camaraderie is instant. You’re working in close proximity every day. You share common experiences (and challenges) by default.
But in civilian life, social interactions just aren’t as straightforward because the environment is so different. Civilian life lacks the same type of “built-in” structures for social support. So, finding those people who still “get it” can seem challenging.
So, as you adjust to life post-service, you need to keep showing up – just as you’ve always done. But it’s going to be different now. You need to consciously prioritise new relationships outside of the military and your immediate family. This requires more drive and more effort, using strategy and initiative.
Strategies for building mateship after service
Engage with veteran groups and networks
You can connect with local or online groups where military experience is the common thread. These are the ones who’ll truly “get it”—and you! These groups can help you adjust to post-service life with a familiar sense of community and shared experiences.
Volunteer for veteran causes
Stay connected to the military community by volunteering at the organisations that support you. It’s a great way to meet other veterans and civilians too. It may even give you a deeper sense of purpose, belonging and camaraderie outside of your uniform.
Participate in local activities
Dive into activities that spark your interest. What do you enjoy doing? Whether it’s sports, technology, or the arts, engaging in community events and classes can help you meet people who share your passions—even if they don’t share your military background.
Importance of social ties
Solid social connections can help ease the stress of transition. When you connect with those who’ve been where you’ve been, you’ll feel more supported and less isolated. But, by opening to the possibility of other connections, such as civilian friendships, you’ll introduce new perspectives and opportunities to enrich your post-service life.
