Navigating Injuries Post-Service: Your Guide to Permanent Impairment (PI) Assessments

Transitioning from the Australian Defence Force (ADF) to civilian life is uniquely challenging. At REFORGE Veteran Care, we understand these challenges deeply and are committed to supporting you every step of the way. Our focus isn’t just on medical issues—it’s about setting you up for success in your post-service life, including helping you navigate the Permanent Impairment (PI) assessment process which is crucial for those with service-related injuries.

What’s a PI Assessment?

A PI assessment evaluates the long-term impact of service-related injuries or conditions. It’s your pathway to compensation for permanent physical and psychological impairments and helps to assess your potential eligibility for a Gold Card (under MRCA or VEA). This financial support also recognises your service and your sacrifices.

The key to a smooth and successful PI assessment is preparation.

How to prepare

Your first step is to notify the DVA and inform them that you want to undertake a PI assessment for your accepted conditions.

Then email your DVA documentation directly to [email protected]

Next, book an appointment with one of our GPs. At GO2 Health, our team of DVA-experienced GPs, overseen by Dr Kieran McCarthy, understand the intricacies of PI assessments. We ensure your evaluation is thorough, accurate and aligned with DVA requirements.

Finally, contact your DVA delegate as soon as you have your GP appointment. This will reset the “28-day expiry” to give you (and us) the maximum time to complete and submit your PI assessment.

What to bring

We only need your recent medical records (including scans and specialist reports) from the last 12 months—we don’t need your entire medical history.

Please also bring your latest “list of accepted conditions” paperwork with accepted dates.

What to expect

To put your mind at ease, here’s what you can expect during your PI assessment:

  1. You’ll discuss your medical history and service-related conditions with one of our GPs experienced in veteran care. You’ll receive a comprehensive assessment according to DVA’s guidelines which usually lasts around 60 minutes. If your assessment is complex, we’ll advise you if more sessions are required.
  2. We’ll handle your paperwork, and we’ll submit it directly to DVA on your behalf.

What happens after

Once your PI assessment is complete and has been submitted by your GP, we will upload the assessment directly to your file at DVA and provide you with a copy. It’s important to stay proactive in tracking its progress though, so make sure you follow up regularly with your DVA delegate.

They can provide updates on where your assessment is in the process and any additional steps you may need to take.

While each PI assessment has a due date attached to it, please be aware at the processing time is unpredictable and may take longer.
